The guys over at TheGlobalGeekPodcast have posted an image of a document which supposedly instructs users on how to install a hard drive. Whoever wrote this document has a poor understanding of the English language and while reading it, I couldn’t help but be reminded of how much this manual reminding me of a piece of spam in my email inbox. Instead of saying, Install the hard drive, this document says to “Install the hard dish” That’s just a prelude of what to expect. Check out the full sized image to read the entire thing.

Are You Unable To Logon To Skype Today?
When I came home from work today at 5:00AM Est, I noticed that Skype was having some issues logging me into my account. Apparently, these issues are still ongoing according to an update posted on Skype.com

Apologies for the delay, but we can now update you on the Skype sign-on issue. As we continue to work hard at resolving the problem, we wanted to dispel some of the concerns that you may have. The Skype system has not crashed or been victim of a cyber attack. We love our customers too much to let that happen. This problem occurred because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user’s own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network.
Rest assured that everyone at Skype is working around the clock — from Tallinn to Luxembourg to San Jose — to resume normal service as quickly as possible.
I know Skype has had this problem for at least 12 hours now and I wonder how many folks are starting to flip out.
Disabled Hotlinking Protection And Other Stuff
I disabled hotlink protection today after discovering that the HTML email subscription emails were not displaying images. After today, all images used within an article should now show up if your viewing the HTML version of the email.
Tomorrow, I will be going through the archive and properly tagging items that haven’t received any tags due to the plugin being installed after a certain amount of posts were already published. This should help make discovering those older articles a bit easier.
I will also try to figure out why the search function of this site doesn’t seem to be finding things I think it should be. I’m also going to try to get a hold of the author of the SEARCH EVERYTHING plugin, to see if I can get that to work, so users can search within comments and various other parts of the site that are not covered by the built in WordPress search.
Just wanted to pass those updates along.
Yappd Reviewed – Non Twitter Killer
As mentioned on AppScout and TechCrunch, Yappd is a Twitter like service which gives users the additional privilege of posting an image along with their Yappd message. Lets take a tour of this service to see if it’s the new Twitter.
Synopses:
Yappd is a brand new company founded by three individuals, Brendan Lim, Brent Collier, and Andrew Tilt. The two founders, Brendan and Brent, both are Software Engineers that decided that it was important to let your friends quickly see what you’re doing. Also, to develop it quickly, the two founders decided to develop Yappd using Ruby on Rails.
Signing Onto The Bandwagon:
The signup process for Yappd is fairly straightforward. What is required to create an account? A first name, last name, preferred username, email address, and preferred password. The standard mojo.
Using Yappd:
Once you log into your Yappd account, the first thing you’ll most likely notice is the Twitter/Jaiku like text area where you can type in your message. Notice how many characters Yappd gives you, 150. Thats right, 10 more characters than what those other guys offer to help you get your point across!

Your watch list, or what is more commonly known as your friends list, is located on the left hand side of your user page. Once you add someone to your watch list, you can watch what they Yapp about from your user account page. One of these days, one of these services are going to use the word STALK as a way to add and monitor friends. At any rate, the Yappd layout is pretty similar to Twitter and Jaiku as all three use Tabs as a way to distinguish between your own messages, your friends messages, and all messages.

Yappd provides a few different ways of posting messages. You can either yapp by email, website, or phone. If you want to yapp by phone, all you have to do is send a text or picture message to yapp@yappd.com. Your yapp will be posted within 1-2 minutes. You can yapp by e-mail the very same way you yapp by phone. Just shoot off your yapps to yapp@yappd.com. Your yapp will be posted within 1-2 minutes. What about the cost, associated with using your phone to yapp? Yappd does not charge you any fee to yapp by phone. You will, however, get charged, the normal rate for a text or picture message from your mobile phone carrier.
A feature almost not worth mentioning is the REMIND ME feature, which if enabled in your privacy settings allows other Yappd users to essentially poke you. This feature is suppose to remind users that they haven’t Yappd in awhile. This small feature reminds me of the POKEing going on in the world of Facebook, just on a smaller scale. I’m glad that Yappd decided to make this a user enabled or disabled feature as I’m sure most folks would not have to be reminded that they are neglecting to Yapp.
Now, I realize the title for this article highlights the fact that in some way shape or form, you can add images to your Yapp messages. I have to admit, I can’t figure out how to perform this function of the service. I have sent an email, asking their support team how this feature works and how it’s defined. I am beginning to think that you can only add images to your Yapp account through a camera enabled mobile phone but until they reply to my email, it’s anyones guess. I tried visiting their HELP section but honestly, it didn’t really HELP me.
Conclusion – Final Thoughts
With Twitter and Jaiku being considered established leaders within their niche (micro-blogging) , I am pretty disappointed to see a service such as Yappd come online without at least, if not more, functionality and features than their competition. I don’t understand why companies who want to enter this space don’t end up taking what’s already available and taking it to the next level. Instead, these companies come online and they look like barebone versions of their competition.
Yappd, has no way of allowing you to direct message your friends, doesn’t have an XML or RSS feed of your own messages, no way to customize the look of your Yappd page, no way to embed your Yappd status or messages into your blog or some other website, no clear concise documentation which would really make the help section, the HELP section and is missing even more features from both Jaiku, Twitter and Pownce that I care to mention.
This is the kind of crap that gives credence to the ongoing debate on whether or not, we are in a Web 2.0 bubble. I will withhold my thoughts and feelings as that is another blog post for another day, but if any of you Yappd guys read this, please as soon as possible, make your site something worth switching too. I’d love to see a blog post from Yappd that explains their vision and where they plan on taking this service as I’ve already seen one of their employees Yapp about how they plan to be around for the long term. I’m sorry, but unless you guys do something revolutionary or at the very least ‘catch up’ there won’t be a long term.
Updates And Feedback Concerning Texty

In light of my Texty review which can be read here, Texty representatives have actually stopped by and left some important feedback regarding my take on the service and for that, I thank them. Texty has reiterated the fact that their service serves the needs of small web publishers as well as the personal site owner. As you may recall, I brought up the fact that because you need to use a line of javascript code in place of text, that Google and other search engine spiders would not be able to crawl the text found within your Texty, as they would only see a line of javascript code. Texty has informed me that they are working with Google on a new method of indexing to insure that their users Texty content is indexed.
Near the end of my review, I mentioned the fact that this company may not be around forever, so those of you who use this service, should only place content you wouldn’t mind losing into your Textys. Texty has stated that:
I can assure you that the company is built to survive – and that there should not be any issue of the company disappearing and content no longer loading!
Thats fine, but until Texty provides a way for users to back up their Textys or at least the content within their Textys, this should at least be a thought that is placed in the back of your mind.
I also wanted to say that I am relieved to see that I am not the only one who is confused with the Texty account creation process. Looking at their help page today, I noticed an individual who had a similar experience and in the end, was just down right confused as to how to create an account. I really think you Texty should either include step by step instructions, or completely change the way users create accounts.
If Texty fixes these outlying problems, I think their service may be on to something.
Photography Contest Update
It’s nearing the middle of August and I’m sad to say that although there are 4 members who have joined the Flickr group, no one as of yet, has submitted any entries. Up for grabs is a free, 1 year Flickr Pro membership which will be awarded to the person who submits a photograph that best represents Web2.0 in the real world.

Some Ideas I Had – Feedback Needed
I just wanted to pass along some ideas I had concerning this site. Your feedback to these ideas or perhaps some of your own would be highly appreciated. The first idea is, creating a live chat area where visitors of this site can get together to chat about the various topics this site covers.
The chat room could be available 24/7 or I could schedule chats which would occur at a specific date and time. I was going to give this a try tonight using Meebo, but I experienced an enormous amount of problems.
The second idea is attaching a forum to the site. The forum would contain sections that would cover the various topics covered on this site. It would open up yet another, community avenue for this site where like minded individuals can get together and talk about what’s going on. I’m not sure if this site has enough traffic, or if the readers of this site would have any interest in becoming a participating member of the forum, so do me a favor and let me know if you like the idea.
If I decided to attach forum software to this site, I would us Vbulletin. Vbulletin is still the best forum software in my opinion and I have a few years of experience using it. I know of an Ajax powered shoutbox which could be used by the forum members as a chatroom, which would solve idea #1. The only problem with using Vbulletin is the price. It currently costs $85.00 for a lease of one year. I’d be willing to chip in $20.00 towards the price, would anyone else be willing to donate towards the forum? If so, let me know.
Those are the ideas I had floating around in my head and I figured I’d toss them out here to see if there were any takers.
Simple Content Creation Using Texty
For webmasters who do not have the luxury of using a WYSIWYG text editor to publish posts, Texty as mentioned on Techcrunch comes in real handy providing a way for anyone to use a rich text editor to create dynamic content.
Synopses:
One of the best features found within most dynamic content management systems is the text editor used to write articles. These text editors give users an abundant amount of options while providing an ease of use factor, allowing virtually anyone to style, format and configure articles without having to know HTML. With that being said, there are still a ton of static websites that are being used today which require users to edit the page within a text editor of their choice such as Dreamweaver or CoffeeCup, require HTML knowledge to create, and last but not least, an FTP connection for uploading those pages to your site. Ajax Edit Comments 1.1.1.0 Released
Ronald Huereca has released a new version of his plugin, Ajax Edit Comments, which gives users and guests the ability to edit their comments similar to the way that comments can be edited on Digg.com The latest version includes a couple of bug fixes, most notably dealing with UTF-8 encoding.
The following issues were addressed in this release:
- Admin were able to edit, but non-admin couldn’t. This was caused by the timer offset in the WordPress admin panel.
- MySQL errors resulted in the comment unable to save. This was caused my blogs and MySQL database not in UTF-8.
- Some characters were being screwed up when saving to the WordPress database. This issue was caused by non-UTF-8 back-ends.
- The blog would be inoperable in Internet Explorer due to multiple session headings being called.
- Random loading comment failure on WP 2.2.2 installs.
The issues (with the exception of issue number 4) can occur on a case-by-case basis depending on blog configuration and character set.

I’ve been meaning to do this for awhile but time hasn’t been on my side. As of now, you can now subscribe to this blog/site by way of email. I realize that not everyone uses a web based feed reader or a stand alone feed reader, so I have given those readers the chance to subscribe via email. Using FeedBurner, I was able to make the HTML based emails look pretty similar to how the articles look on this site.
