WordPress Weekly – Episode 2

WordPress Weekly Logo

I really apologize for this weeks show. I wasn’t as prepared as I should of been and overall, it’s just been one hell of a week. There will be no WordPress Weekly Episode Three for the week of January 13th. However, the next episode of WordPress Weekly will be on Friday, January 25th, 2008. If you end up taking a listen to the show, I thank you for putting up with it. Next time, I will be well prepared and take the proper precautions to ensure that the next episode will be a good one. Thanks to Ronald, Brad and Andrew Rickmann for appearing on the show, I really appreciate it.

Show Notes:

Here are the stories we will discuss in Episode 2.

Matt Mullenweg Turns 24 Matt Mullenweg, one of the WordPress founders turns 24 years old. Happy birthday man.

WordPress Weekly Digest for Dec 31st 2007 – Jan 6th 2008. Peter Westwood lets us know what has been changed and or fixed within the WordPress core throughout this time period. There quite a few things that are worth sharing in this update such as, the integration of the functions that the Optimal Title plugin was known for, the introduction of auto-suggest for tags, a new sidebar interface to choose which widgets you want on which sidebar, and last but not least, changes to the dual/visual code editors to remember which one you used last.

Smashing Magazines 100 Excellent Free WordPress Themes Smashing Magazine has done it again by publishing an article which highlights 100 different high quality WordPress Themes. Some of these I’ve seen before while there are also a few new ones in this pack.

Uninstall – Is There Such A Thing? Earlier this week, I posted an article that took a hard look as to what uninstall actually means when you look at WordPress plugins. This has been a hot topic of debate during the week and I feel it will probably take up most of the show.

General Motors Using WordPress – One of the new General Motors community websites has elected to use WordPress as their publishing platform of choice. Personally, I don’t like the design and they are already a version behind.

WordPress Tips Of The Week:

Jeffro2pt0How To: Blocking Your WordPress Categories and Archives From Google Kyle Eslick has posted a small guide which explains how to cut down on the internal duplicate content issue. As it turns out, the biggest culprit for duplicate content is the Archive pages.

Ronald – Separate trackbacks from comments. Click here for a tutorial from DBT. While you’re at it, allow users to comment without having to register.

Here’s a bonus tip: If you are releasing something that you expect to get a lot of trackbacks from (such as a plugin), turn trackbacks off. Trackbacks usually only benefit the blog author anyway.

BradOur To Do List Plugin A simple todo list plugin to share ideas/todos with blog members. All members work together to manage the todo list under “Manage” section in WordPress administration interface.

Andrew Rickmann - An Uninstall tool that adds an uninstallation option on the plugins page. The uninstall option will only show up if the plugin has been deactivated and if the plugin author has created an uninstall file. Check out the second iteration of his tool, here.

Listener Participation:

So how can you be a part of the show? Well, there are a number of ways. The easiest way is to create an account on Talkshoe.com. Then, download and install their client software. The Talkshoe software serves as a bridge of communication between the host, and his/her listeners. The software contains a chat room as well as phone number information to call into the show.

However, you do not need to install the software in order to listen to the show live. Friday at 9PM EST, look on the front page of Talkshoe.com or click on the LIVE NOW button and look for the WordPress Weekly show. Instead of clicking on the JOIN IN button, click underneath where it says LISTEN ONLY. This will tune you into the live stream.

If you want to call in to the show via telephone, Skype, etc., use your phone to call 724-444-7444 and follow the audio instructions. *Note* In one of the recent updates to Talkshoe, anonymous calling is now supported. This means you can call in and participate without the need to create a Talkshoe account. However, if you have a Talkshoe account, your registered name will show up within the Talkshoe client letting others know who is speaking.

You can also use SIP clients such as ProjectGizmo or X-Lite. For example, when I use X-Lite to dial in, I type in 123@66.212.134.192 and then follow the audio directions.

Remember this information as it will be required when you want to dial into the show.

  1. Brad says:

Excellent list of topics, should be another great show!

I think I’m going to sign up for Skype Pro so I can use my mic this week. I’m hoping the audio will be better because of it. It’s only $3/month, which isn’t bad.

  2. Jeffro says:

Looking forward to it Brad. Did you listen to episode 1 last week? It sounded like there was some wind blowing on your cell phone at times lol.

  3. Brad says:

haha yeah I heard that. I was going in and out letting my dogs out. I’ll make sure not to do that again ;)

  4. John Kolbert says:

I’m looking forward to it! I won’t be able to listen to it till later in the weekend, but looks like you’ve got some interesting topics!

  5. Jeffro says:

@John Kolbert Thanks John. It’s a podcast so you can listen to it whenever you want :) That’s the beauty of the medium. Looking forward to having you on the show in the near future.

  6. Mike says:

So, at 5:30 AM while trying to fall asleep after a long night of coding the new template, I had an epiphany.

You know. One of those moments of complete clarity.

I’m thinking of dedicating my site to ‘everything the web offers that’s aesthetically pleasing’.

From great new icons, to great looking templates/sites and even cool ajax scripts.

I reckon it can complement your site really well. You dwell a lot into the more ‘technical’ aspects of WP. I’m thinking I could dwell into the design side of things.

Well, just a thought. What do you reckon?

I really like how your site is dedicated mainly to one thing. And it’s doing it rather well.

Anyway, hopefully I can fall asleep so I can wake up for the session. :)

  7. Jeffro says:

@Mike Heh, lay of the crack cocaine dude! Just kidding :) I don’t know if you can consider this blog, a blog about one thing. I mean, in the title it says BLOG ABOUT STUFF because that’s essentially what it still is. However, after all of this time of blogging about different things, my WordPress based posts seem to garner the most interest and the way things have been working out for me, it looks like blogging about WordPress could possible be my niche.

I would say to blog about something you’re interested in and can continue to be interested in for quite a while. It also helps if you can establish a common group of people that are also interested in the subjects you’re posting about such as what I have done. I’m still working on building a community around the blog here, but because of people like you, Mark, Brad, Ronald, John Kolbert, things are on the up and up.

I would just blog about STUFF until something clicks.

  8. Mike says:

Yep, I totally agree. I’ve always been interested in graphic/web design, so I reckon this might click.

I can’t believe It’s now nearly 6am and I doubt I’ll be heading to sleep anymore.

I’m just a bit pleased with the new theme. It’s coming along quite nicely. Heaps of effort though, especially in the last few hours after testing it in IE for the first time.

I managed to get most ‘bugs’ fixed. And managed to implement a navigation system that arguably looks better than the tabs I was mucking around with previously.

Well, we’ll see how it goes.

Prepared for the webcast yet? :)

  9. Jeffro says:

@Mike Yep, I’m prepared and looking forward to it. The uninstall issue should take up most of the show.

  10. Brad says:

    Just saw this posted:

    http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/404112/

Matt Mullenweg’s BDay party tonight. Be fun to mention as well!

  11. Jeffro says:

Sure thing Brad. I talked with photomatt today about the uninstalling problem and it’s been an interesting discussion.

  13. This will more than likely be my tip of the week: Separate trackbacks from comments. Click here for a tutorial from DBT. While you’re at it, allow users to comment without having to register. :)

Here’s a bonus tip: If you are releasing something that you expect to get a lot of trackbacks from (such as a plugin), turn trackbacks off. Trackbacks usually only benefit the blog author anyway.

  14. Brad says:

My audio is really muffled. Damn skype, I was hoping for better audio this week.

  15. Jeffro says:

@Brad I thought you sounded fine during the show, loud and clear. It was Ronald who was coming in muffled. Man, going to have to get you two some Plantronics Headsets :P

  16. Jeffro says:

Show notes and all that other jazz has been added to the show notes. Next time, it will be a better show :)

  17. Mark says:

0mg its Jeffro can I has autograph?

  18. Jeffro says:

@Mark I believe the proper spelling is “haz” Mark :P

  19. Mike says:

Hey man, I liked your followup uninstall article.

I’d be very interested to see where this will go.

Also, Ronald had a post about premium themes. Personally I reckon they’re a waste of cash. I’ve seen many free ones that look better, or at least have the layout that can be modified to look better than some premium ones.

  20. Jeffro says:

@Mike Yeah, I pretty much summed up my opinion in that, premium themes means you have to pay for it. The only difference I can see between a free theme and a premium theme is the price.

  21. Darn it, I did come out really muffled. I used Skype and a headset. I’m not sure how I can get any clearer, but I’ll be playing around with a few things.
